The French Ambassador to the United States, Pierre Vimont, along with Andre Syrota, M.D., PhD, general director of Inserm, the French equivalent to the NIH, toured their $8 million investment at the Baylor Research Institute (BRI) on Friday, June 19, 2009.
Inserm awarded Baylor the multimillion grant to research a potential HIV vaccine—one designed to help patients better control their disease without the use of medication. Baylor Institute for Immunology Research (BIIR), a component of BRI and led by Jacques Banchereau, PhD, has been researching a unique technology aimed at restoring an HIV-infected persons immunological response to the virus using cells from the patients own immune system.
